Day 4

This morning we slept in late. We did not waking up until about 9am. The funny this is at home we are awake early. We really sleep comfortably on our 3 inch camper mattress. We had a light breakfast and prepared The Shack for our day. Typically, when we are going exploring we don’t pack up everything. We basically secure necessary items. It is usually a jumbled mess.

Today, we planned to check out the Boquillas Canyon. As, we drove to the canyon we stopped to look at various Boquillas souvenirs available for sale along the roadside.

As we walked up to the canyon trail, we encountered 1 hispanic man selling souvenirs and chicken tamales. He was traveling on horseback. We continued long our hike. Arriving along the same path at some burros (donkeys) Eventually, reaching the Rio Grande inside the canyon.

We walked through areas of the canyon trail. Finally, reaching a point we did not feel comfortable traveling. Plus, our feet were sinking in the mud. My feet were covered in muddy clay.

On our way back, we noticed some goat across the Rio Grande. We soon saw another man on a horse. He asked if we seen any goats. So, we pointed him in their direction.

We continued our way back to The Shack. Suddenly, we see that man from our 1 encounter (the tamale man) riding towards the rio on his horse. We see 2 border patrol officers on foot heading towards him. I want to yell out “La Migra, La Migra!!! Which is slang for border patrol. The mans horse was just not fast enough. But, La Migras were not very fast themselves. The guy got away! There goes the tamales I was going to buy from him. Geez, thanks border patrol, ha ha! It was obviously a speckle for other hikers.

After, we left the canyon we drove around looking at other camping spots. These spots were way more dispersed but still have to be reserved and a permit issued. There were a few that had really nice views of the surrounding mountains. It’s areas like these Jacob likes to stay at…in the middle of nowhere.

We ended our day with a nice dinner at the restaurant at the Chisos Mountain Basin Lodge. It was Jacob’s birthday dinner. Though, his birthday is not until tomorrow 12/13/24.
