Day 42

Today, the wind is supposed to be pretty bad again. So, we decided we would go into town. We had not explored this little island town.

So, we set off for some breakfast. That was an epic fail. The restaurant we were going to was closed for the season. We looked on the website and they said “open”.

We thought we would explore the Ocracoke Lighthouse.

This lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in N. Carolina. It is one of the oldest in N. America as well. It was built in 1823 and stands 75 ft tall. Once operated by brave lighthouse keepers that worked frivolously day in and day out. The children on the family’s often carried oil, trim wicks, and cleans the mirrored lenses.

Now, automated it continues to be active and functioning in the navigation of the United States Coast Guard. The foundation is brick and stone. The walls are 5’ thick narrowing to 2’ thick to the top. It took 850,000 bricks to complete. Now days the outside brick of the lighthouse is painted. But, previously it was whitewashed with a mixture of salt, Spanish whiting, rice, glue and boiling water.

We figured by now the restaurants would be open. So, we drove by the 2 that we heard were for sure open for the season. Well, that was another fail. Come to find out, they do not open on Monday’s. UGH!!! So, we went to the all in one grocery and supplies store on the island. I got us some hotdog buns. We went back to the campground. I made us some jalapeño and cheese sausages. I threw them in the buns. That was brunch.

Goodness, this day was just a hunger failure. But, it was not going to ruin our day. This evening we went for walk with the boys on the beach. There was no a soul on it.

Jacob loves the beach. Like a kid, he had to go touch the water to see if it was cold. Yep, it was!

I absolutely love the joy in his face. The Beach is his happy place!
