Day 6
This blog is actually for 12/14/24. I did not feel like blogging yesterday. Plus, we were having issues with our Starlink connection. So, I just take a break.
We only had 2 excursions planned. One was a Fossil Discovery Exhibit. The drive there was very scenic and the landscape was strangely beautiful.
The exhibit is a small place with lots of information. The is over 90 dinosaurs species. Many who’s fossils have been discovered in Big Bend along with plants, fish, frogs, salamanders, turtles, crocodiles, lizards and early mammals like the saber tooth tiger.
Jacob and I are always amazed at the size of these long extinct creatures. Then, we look around at the mountains and vast areas of land memorized that all of it was once covered by huge bodies of water. Texas was once at the bottom of the sea filled with life stated on billboard. Could you imagine seeing some of these dinosaurs roaming around or swimming and seeing this fish in the ocean? I stood by the femur of a T-Rex. The bone itself was 7ft tall.
Our next place to explore was Santa Elena Canyon. The canyon is 8 miles long and 1500 ft deep. It was beautiful. We made it through the hike just in time for the sun to still shine on the water and walls of the canyon. There were several people coming and going from the canyon. But, for about 10 mins., we had it to ourselves. Soon, there were a few other couples. A canyon is always a fun place to hear your echo. I wonder why we are always so amused with hearing our voice amplify throughout a place. Jacob would whistle and it seemed like it would carry all through Santa Elena.
We hiked out of the canyon and I was met with another sight. HORSES!!! Now, anyone that followed our last trip might have read about us seeing mustangs in various places we camped at. Of, course I had to get as close as possible to them. They were just beautiful! But, since Santa Elena Canyon splits the US and Mexico. I wondered if they were in Texas illegally or were they legal mustangs of the US.
We got back to the campground. Jacob spoke with the neighbor while I cooked dinner. Afterwards, we were outside enjoying our evening coffee. Then, Jacob said “I hear like a crunching sound.” I said “it could be the cows on the other side of the fence.” Suddenly, I see something black moving. I grabbed the flashlight and there it was…. A JAVELINA! I was just about 8 ft from us eating away on some seeds from the trees. So, we decided to go inside and let it be. Later, Jacob went to take the dogs to go potty. He said there was about 10 more between our camp and the neighbors. I just opted to stay inside. I am not going to become Javelina food. Ha ha. Yes, I know are herbivores. But, did you know they are not part of the pig family? Go ahead look it up.
